Now that we?re into our second week of matches, the CHRHS players have settled into their competitive season quite well. They showed confidence walking out onto the court with Belfast, even though they were aware that this would most likely be their toughest competition so far. Sportsmanship and teamwork on the part of both teams was great, and those who weren?t playing at the time cheered the others from the sidelines. I was pleased that our girls came off the court knowing what their strengths were as well as what we need to work on for future matches. Enthusiasm is high right now, and everyone?s having a good time playing.

I was really impressed with our doubles teams? net play ? the players are going after volleys, and this is going to be extremely important going forward. I haven?t had a group of doubles players this enthusiastic about playing net in a while. It?s an advantage we currently have and we?re going to build on it by finding those opportunities to come forward. Also, our third singles player has definitely settled into her groove with confidence as well as the consistency she showed last year whenever she played. I noticed that Camilla (#3) also came forward to play some net which you don?t always see in singles.

At #2 singles, Abby implemented a strategy we?ve been working on which is practicing patience with strokes during a point and taking a bit of speed off. At this match it not only helped her during rallies, but she applied it to her serving. It completes Abby?s game ? she already has power and placement, and now she?s varying the speed of the ball too and waiting for the right time to finish the point. She?s doing really well with it.

The number one singles between Belfast and Camden Hills drew a crowd of onlookers as the match had a lot of high-paced tennis. Belfast?s #1, Shashauna Moll, is probably Emma?s biggest rival in our league and is a very talented player. Both players brought out their best quality tennis at this match, and it was very even as the set went on. Momentum swung during the course of the 8-game pro set, leaning toward Belfast after four games and then back toward CHRHS as Emma came back from 2-5 to make the match even again. She did this through focusing on constructing the point. Shashauna?s momentum returned at the end of the pro set and she pulled out the win at 8-6. Playing pro sets instead of our regular two-out-of-three sets format made a made the match different than it would have been, which we had to do with limited court time indoors.

Exhibition matches were wonderful today ? all 14 players were on the court and some of the Belfast girls stepped in to play twice. We have such a deep team that I could put several of our exhibition players into doubles positions in some upcoming matches. We also have an exhibition singles players, Anna Mason, who was very successful in the Belfast match. We have an especially well-rounded team this year with everyone contributing both on and off the court.

It was truly a pleasure to play against the Belfast team. They have a talented bunch of players. The CHRHS girls have not played a home match outdoors yet, so we?re looking forward to doing that on Thursday when we host Maranacook.
