Protecting the GOP's Northeastern wing

One result of the 2010 Republican romp is that the GOP suddenly has a Northeastern wing to protect, filled with vulnerable newly-elected members from places like Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and New Hampshire.

That?s something the party hasn?t had to worry about in recent years because the region had been such a disaster zone for the GOP. At one point in 2009, for example, the 29-member New York delegation had just two Republicans -- down from 10 in 2004.

Fresh polling out of New Hampshire shows how tough it will be to protect them all in 2012.

According to a WMUR Granite State Poll released Thursday, former Democratic Rep. Carol Shea Porter leads freshman GOP Rep. Frank Giunta in their rematch, 44% to 39%. In another 2010 rematch, Democrat Ann McLane Kuster leads GOP Rep. Charlie Bass, 40% to 39%.

The sample sizes here are small but the UNH Survey Center does a great job of presenting the data. You can look at Bass and Giunta's numbers since taking office, and get a sense of the political toll that the government shutdown and debt ceiling debates took on their favorability ratings. Their numbers have ticked back up since then, but these are shaping up to be tight races.
