Nisargadhama ? Nature's Own Wildlife Sanctuary

Nisargadhama is a succession of large and small islands on the banks of River Cauvery near to Kushalnagar town in Karnataka?s Coorg district. Many shallow portions are present in the river, where one could just walk through. This is a tourist place visited by numerous tourists and perfect for honeymoon tours and picnics, as the serene beauty and calm of this place will definitely rejuvenate and offer an unforgettable experience.

One word that could be aptly used to describe Nisargadhama is "Awesome". This picturesque as well as adventurous place offers wonderful scenes and watching deer, peacocks, elephants and many others adds to the thrill and excitement of young and old alike. One can experience riding on an elephant to move around the place to make it an unforgettable ride.

Visitors could also enjoy swimming and boating apart from elephant rides and nature watching.

Travel and accommodation

It is an excellent place for spending evenings. Post monsoon season could be the best time for visiting this place, September to February is the apt time. Food and accommodation of your choice is easily obtainable at Kushalnagar. You could also stay at the cottages that are run by the Forest Department. Hire a bus and travel 220km from Bangalore to reach Cauvery Nisargadhama.

After reaching the Kushalnagara town, you need to go through Madikeri road and then turn left to arrive at Nisargadhama. KSRTC runs sufficient amount of services for visiting the place. It?s only 4km from Kushalnagar to Nisargadhama and could be reached by an auto.

Cauvery Nisargadhama, as its name suggests is the eco-tourism project that was undertaken by the forest department in the year 1988.? It?s an island of about 35 acres, where the sacred Cauvery River flows. A 35 Km travel from Madikeri town by purchasing bus tickets takes you to Kushalnagar.

Places of interest in and around Nisargadhama

After buying entry tickets, a hanging bridge has to be crossed to access this beautiful land mass. ?The island has lush green cover.? Bamboo bushes and huge trees that seem to touch the sky give enough shade. Machans or tree top watchtowers are available with ladders along with Bamboo swings and pergolas.? A small children?s play area is also present with the usual swings, seesaw etc.?

The presence of rabbit, deer and Peacock Park on the island appends to the excitement of kids. A tiny opening in thicket will lead you to riverside to soak or wet yourselves.? One needs to be very careful here, as the river current could be very strong.? At island?s one corner, an Orchid garden is present. A shop on island sells nice souvenir such as bamboo vases, key chains, wall hangings, baskets etc.

Namdroling Monastery at 8 kilometers, Dubbare Elephant Camp at 12 kilometers, Harangi Dam and Reservoir at 7 kilometers and Abbey Falls are the other nearby spots that are worth visiting.

How to reach and facilities

You could do online bus tickets reservation to Mysore, which is at 95 kilometers or from Bangalore, which is at a distance of 235 Kilometers or to Madikeri, which lies at 35 Km from Kushalnagar from where Nisargadhama is just 2 Km away. Restaurant, Rest Room and Cottages are also available.
