Organic Shingles
Organic shingles are made with an organic mat made from recycled wood pulp, old newspapers, and other paper products. The mat is saturated with asphalt then coated with ceramic granules. The ceramic granules provide the color of the shingle and protect it from the harmful UV rays of the sun.
Fiberglass Shingles
Modern asphalt shingles have fiberglass mats. These mats weigh less than organic mats and can hold more asphalt. Fiberglass shingles also last longer than organic shingles, which is why the latter come with longer warranties.
Comparison
On first glance, the advantages of fiberglass shingles do seem to outweigh those presented by organic shingles. However, some homeowners claim that fiberglass shingles break more easily than organic shingles. Given that fiberglass mats are more brittle than organic mats, this is a possibility. However, there are other factors to consider.

Wind Resistance
Asphalt shingles can also be rated for wind resistance. High performance laminated fiberglass shingles (those with multiple layers of mats) can be rated to resist winds with speeds as fast as 130 miles per hour. However, any asphalt shingle must be able to withstand sustained exposure to 60 mph wind for two hours before it can qualify for a wind-resistant label.
Fire Resistance
Asphalt shingles are also rated for fire resistance. All fiberglass mat shingles are given Class A rating. This means that the roofing material can withstand severe exposure to fire.? Unfortunately, organic shingles are often excluded in this category as the material used in its matting catches fire easily.
